Tibbets came to nearby Punta Gorda in April 2002 to speak to the Punta Gorda Rotary Club and serve as honorary chairman of the 22 nd Annual Florida International Air Show held at the Charlotte County Airport. The “Red Gremlin” was the plane he piloted as commander of the first B-17 squadron to bomb Nazi-occupied France during the summer of 1942 as part of the 97 th Bombardment Group. Paul Tibbets flew a B-17 Flying Fortress over Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich.
